Hi, my name is Ashley Perez and I am currently a freshman at Rider University. I am part of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and this past summer I was given the opportunity to be a student of Professor McManimon’s, this past fall semester I was also her student in the Intro to Speech and Communications class. I have learned a lot this past summer and fall semester. I walked into her class during this previous EOP summer bashful to speak in front of an audience, uncommunicative, and uneducated about presentations. Who knew there were so many types of presentations? Humor, Persuasive, Entertainment, and Passion speeches and in each and every one I learned so much about their specific techniques and so much about myself. Now that the fall semester concluded so did this amazing and informative class. I have learned so much about myself as a person, and so much information for my future. I know that in the future I will always be prepared for an interview, with a great resume in hand, and cover letter. I know I will always have Professor McManimon to thank for all of this. I would recommend her as a professor and her class for any student entering college.

My name is Monique Guz and I am a sophomore at Rider University and also a participant of the Educational Opportunity Program. I came to Professor McManimon with a severe fear of speech and presenting myself to an audience, not because I was uncomfortable with myself but because I had come from a "hard place" that had permanently scarred me from locking eyes with others and prevented me from putting forth energy and enthusiasm when I felt apathy inside. I really hated speaking in front of large groups, but I watched myself conquer that dislike with every exercise be it elevator speeches, mock interviews, entertainment speeches, passion speeches and informative speeches. I didn't even know there was a whole structure behind giving speeches until her class. I really learned so much about the art of communication because it's vital in our everyday lives. Once you know how to communicate effectively, you can get anything you want -- be it the crucial networking that gets you the job or the plea for waiving your traffic ticket. I have utilized the knowledge I learned from this class towards managing a television show, broadcasting on the radio, public relations, serving as a tour guide for Rider University, working as a receptionist at a hotel, writing various pieces for the media, working with my band and getting things that I needed through branches of the school and government. It's so very important to be skilled in the art of communication, because it really opens up an innumerable amount of doors. It also allows you to interpret the psychology behind the person who is trying to communicate with you -- allowing you to tell if they are truly authentic in their message or if they are just baiting you, using your or filling you with propaganda. It has really brought out the true colors of the people around me. There is so much more to communication than just the words, once you realize and interpret the actions behind it, a whole new reality breaks through. This class has really impacted me with learning how to tap into the audience's mind and how to maintain control over their attention -- most importantly, how to make them understand the view from my shoes. It's a priceless skill to carry with you throughout your life. Anything is possible when you communicate effectively. Thanks Prof. M!

I am a student at The College of New Jersey and recently had the privilege of being in Professor McManimon's Public Speaking in Business and Government class. Professor McManimon has been one of the best professors I have had in my nearly three years at The College. She has a passion for the subjects she teaches and that passion affects all students she comes into contact with. My experiences in her class have made me a stronger, more confident speaker and a more effective communicator in general.
Professor McManimon always made herself available to students outside of class and helped all of us out with any and all questions we may have had. Although the course was entitled "Public Speaking for Business and Government", Professor McManimon incorporated all areas of communication - including new technologies. She introduced the students to various forms of Web 2.0 and helped us create virtual portfolios and resumes (which came in very handy for me!). Nearly all students had not yet been exposed to these important technological aspects of communication, and Prof. McManimon provided an invaluable opportunity.
Throughout the semester, Professor McManimon assisted students with their resumes, critiquing both in and outside of the classroom. During this time, I was applying for an internship, and Prof. McManimon went out of her way to help me in perfecting my current resume. A professor with as much dedication and passion towards her work as Professor McManimon is hard to come by. I sincerely believe that I have gained valuable experience and knowledge through her teaching.

Hello, my name is Lisa Henderson and I am a full-time freshman student at Rider University. As a member of the Equal Opportunity Program (EOP) here at Rider, I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to participate in a course under the direction of Mrs. Susan McManimon. We commenced with the Speech Communication class in summer of 2008 and just recently completed it with the closing of the fall semester in December of 2008. With the end of this course came a feeling of ultimate accomplishment for me. Although I participated in numerous acting and public speaking programs throughout my grade school years, no other course or training awarded me with as much hands-on experience as Professor McManimon’s Speech Communication class. She is an exceptional teacher who focuses on presenting the class with many interactive exercises that help us to strengthen our skills and confidence when in front of an audience. For me, learning the art of public speaking fully is so important because it correlates directly with my major of choice – broadcast journalism. My favorite lesson was definitely our focus on the Humorous Speech in which we used many skills with intention to entertain and make our audience laugh. This lesson was fun, engaging, and left me feeling excited to move onto speaking for bigger audiences in the near future. It was obvious throughout the entire course that Professor McManimon wanted success for all of her students. She was available for many one-on-one sessions for any student who felt they needed an extra push in the right direction. Overall, Professor McManimon’s course was definitely memorable and she is one who’s teachings I will absolutely carry with me for the rest of my life.

Hello, my name is Vanessa Maldonado and I am currently a freshman at Rider University. I am also a member of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) at Rider. Over the summer and the fall semester I was given the privilege of being a student of Professor McManimon's speech and communications class. As a very shy person I admit that I was terrified to speak in front of an audience. But with the help of Prof. McManimon, I learned to not be afraid, everyone has to speak sometime in their lives. But I also learned a lot of the proper public speaking techniques. For instance, in every speech Prof. M taught us that you need an attention getter and a thesis statement. Another important thing that I learned in Prof. M's class was how to use power point for a speech. She taught us how to use the power point and how to make the power point follow what you are saying in your speech.
This class has taught me so much, I know that sounds cliche but out of all my classes I would have to say that this one has really taught me the most. Not only has it taught me how to properly speak in front of an audience, the many types of speeches (Humor, Persuasive, Entertainment, and so on), how to make a resume and cover letter, how to have an effective interview with an employer, but it has also given me confidence. Thanks to Professor McManimon I am confident to speak to an audience and I'm not so shy anymore. I would also have to recommend this class to students who are interested in effective speaking and I would also recommend taking the class with Professor McManimon.

Let me begin by saying I hope that every Professor could have the enthusiasm and generosity of spirit Professor McManimon attains! She is a special gift from God and I hope she knows that she is appreciated. I begin this way because I have noticed how much she extends herself to others. Professor to student, I found that to be extremely admirable. She always goes out of her way to make everyone in the class feel comfortable and to let them know they have a friend-- if they want one! This is indeed a rare quality. Most people are afraid to take a chance and extend a hand. But she does not seem to fear rejection-- I believe that it is hard being a Professor because you are always trying to get your students to really listen to what you are teaching them. I have learned sooo much from Professor McManimon and I truly appreciate her. It is not just about what you learn academically, more importantly it is the example you set.
